The Australian Comforts Fund (ACF) was established in August 1916 to co-ordinate the activities of the state-based patriotic funds. The ACF raised money to buy and make items that could be sent to the troops. They also ran small canteens near the front lines that served food and provided other items such as clothes, games, and newspapers and magazines. Selling badges such as this one was one of the ways that money was raised.
