the absence of authority

From 1860 to 1916 the British military required soldiers to sport a moustache for the authority it was believed to impart.

It is 1983.

I am 15.

I am a girl.

I have a moustache.

Apparently: this is wrong.

I am the wrong kind of girl.

I require fixing.

Adjustment.

Fine tuning.

Overhaul.

electrolysis

/ˌɪlɛkˈtrɒlɪsɪs,ˌɛlɛkˈtrɒlɪsɪs/

noun

1.

CHEMISTRY

chemical decomposition produced by passing an electric current through a liquid or solution containing ions.

2.

the removal of hair roots or small blemishes on the skin by the application of heat using an electric current.

The electrolysist’s office was in the same neighbourhood as the orthodontist’s.

Also, there was a hair salon nearby.

In that neighbourhood, I would be transformed!

I am a real girl, shouts Pinocchio-la, facing chemical decomposition.

I had 11 teeth pulled prior to the braces.

I could smell my hair burning under the curling iron.

My upper lip was puffy and pink after electrolysis that wasn’t supposed to hurt.

Taking such pains to ensure the presence of femininity, the absence of authority.
